Yanco Osaka Collection

Osaka is 41 pieces of white melamine, and it is not one pattern but two closely related series sold under one name. Thirty-eight items carry an explicit Osaka-1 or Osaka-2 label in the product title; the remaining three are cataloged as plain "Osaka". The split matters when you order, because the two series solve different problems: Osaka-1 is the tableware — squares, rounds, divided plates and rectangular bowls sized for one diner — while Osaka-2 is the display side, built around large rectangular platters, narrow sushi plates and seafood bowls meant for the counter and the sharing table.

Telling Osaka-1 from Osaka-2

Osaka-1 holds the plate program: square plates at 7-1/4", 10-1/2" and 14-1/2"; round plates at 9-3/4" and 12"; rectangles at 11" x 8", 13" x 9" and 16" x 10-1/2"; two deep rectangles at 6" x 4-1/2" and 8" x 5-1/2"; three divided plates at 7-3/4" x 4-1/2", 8-3/4" x 5-1/2" and 9-3/4" x 6-1/4"; a four-step rectangular bowl run at 12 oz, 20 oz, 30 oz and 42 oz; plus an 8 oz rice bowl and a 4-1/8" sauce dish.

Osaka-2 is the display series. Its rectangular plates run from 13" x 6-3/4" and 13" x 7" up through 14" x 7", 12-3/4" x 10-1/2", 18" x 12", 20" x 14", 21" x 7" and 21" x 13". Note the two 21" pieces are different shapes, not duplicates: one is a narrow runner, the other a full platter. Osaka-2 also carries the narrow sushi plates at 9-1/2" x 4" and 14-1/2" x 4-1/4", two seafood bowls — the 11" square and the 16" x 7-3/4" x 3-1/2" rectangle — a 10 oz rice bowl, a 14 oz soup bowl, a 10 oz square bowl, a food container, sauce dishes including a double divided dish, and the OK-4033 chopstick holder.

The three unlabeled pieces are the OK-817 three-compartment bowl (2 oz per well), the OK-108 square plate (8-1/4") and the OK-608 food container (8"). They coordinate with both series.

Why the display sizes go so large

Very little melamine is offered above 18", and Osaka-2 runs to 21" x 13". That size exists because a sushi counter presenting a shared order needs a surface the kitchen can build on and a runner can carry in one trip — a job that otherwise falls to wooden boards or lacquer, neither of which goes through a commercial dishwasher. The narrow runners (14-1/2" x 4-1/4" and 21" x 7") do the opposite job: they fit the width of a bar rail or a counter edge where a wide platter will not sit. Between the two, and with a case pack of six on the largest pieces, an operator can specify display ware by footprint rather than by compromise.
