Cracks in a tandoor clay pot are completely normal. The extreme heat cycles that a clay oven goes through during daily restaurant use, heating up to 900°F and cooling back down, naturally cause the clay to expand and contract over time, and small cracks are a byproduct of that process. These cracks do not ruin your tandoor or affect its cooking ability, but they do need to be patched periodically to maintain the structural integrity of the clay and keep your oven performing at its best for years.

Our Tandoor Clay Mix is a 3 lb. concentrated clay mix made from the same clay formula used in Shaan tandoor ovens. It is designed specifically for patching cracks, filling gaps, and maintaining the interior clay pot of any commercial gas tandoor. The clay is easy to work with: you mix it with water to the right consistency, apply it to the cracked areas, let it cure, and your tandoor is ready to fire up again. An instructional video is included with every purchase to walk you through the application process step by step.

One important safety note: the tandoor burner and pilot must be completely shut off for a minimum of 10 to 12 hours before applying clay. Never apply clay to a hot clay pot. The clay needs to be applied to a fully cooled surface to bond properly and cure without cracking again immediately.

If you run a tandoor in your restaurant, keeping a bag of clay mix on hand at all times is a simple way to avoid any downtime. A quick patch job during a slow day or between services keeps your clay pot in solid shape and prevents small cracks from turning into bigger problems. For restaurants that run their tandoor heavily every day, we recommend checking the clay interior weekly and patching as needed.
