Blue Star is 36 pieces of blue-glazed ceramic built on the same tooling Yanco uses for its Noble Black pattern — the rectangular plate ladder, the dessert plates, the bowl series and the handled bake plates are shared shapes in a different glaze. What Blue Star adds on top is the part worth knowing: a coffee cup and saucer, a round bake plate, a Mediterranean pasta bowl, a handled skillet bowl and a three-size leaf plate. What it drops is the oval plate range. If you are choosing between the two, that is the trade.

The handled pieces

Four items in this pattern have a cast handle, which is more than any other Yanco color-glazed line carries. The Yanco BL-907 Round Bake Plate (20 oz, 7.5" x 5.75") is the small gratin shape; the Yanco BL-910 Square Bake Plate (25 oz) and Yanco BL-912 Square Bake Plate (70 oz, 13.75" x 7") step up to a shared course. The Yanco BL-4105 Skillet Bowl (22 oz) is deeper-walled than the bake plates and sized for a single hot appetizer. All four go from the oven straight onto the table, and the handle is what makes that practical on a busy pass.

Two Mediterranean bowls, two depths

Blue Star carries a pair of elongated bowls that most patterns in this family do not. The Yanco BL-711 Deep Mediterranean Bowl (20 oz, 11.125" x 7" x 3.25") is the tall one, for a braise or a shared mezze; the Yanco BL-710 Mediterranean Pasta Bowl (12 oz, 10.75" x 7" x 2.25") covers almost the same footprint at an inch less depth and 8 oz less volume, which is the difference between a soup presentation and a plated pasta. The rest of the bowl bench runs on the BL-808 Noodle Bowl (30 oz), BL-807 Salad Bowl (28 oz), BL-609 Salad/Pasta Bowl (28 oz), BL-608 Salad/Soup Bowl (20 oz), BL-806 Nappie Bowl (14 oz), BL-805 Rice Bowl (10 oz), BL-804 Soup Bowl (10 oz) and the small BL-703 Olive Bowl (2 oz).

Plates

The leaf plates are the most photographed shape in the line: BL-310 (10.25" x 5"), BL-314 (14.25" x 8.5") and BL-316 (16.5" x 7.625"). Rectangles come in two proportions — the narrow BL-513 (13.75" x 5") and BL-515 (15.875" x 5.5") for a row of appetizers, and the broader BL-512 (12" x 6.5") and BL-514 (14.25" x 7.5") for a full plated entrée.

Round plates come with either rim treatment. Coupe: BL-107 (7.125"), BL-109 (9.125"), BL-110 (10.5") and BL-112 (12.125"). Upright rim: BL-207 (7.5"), BL-208 (8.25"), BL-210 (10.25") and BL-212 (12.5"). Dessert service uses the walled BL-610 (10 oz) and BL-611 (16 oz).

Condiments and coffee

Sauce service runs on the BL-4030 (1 oz), the deeper BL-4031 Square Sauce Dish (3.5 oz) and the twin-well BL-4032 Double Sauce Dish (1.5 oz each). The BL-001 Coffee Cup (8 oz) and its BL-002 Saucer (6" x 4.75") give this pattern a proper cup service — the one thing its closest sibling pattern lacks.

Blue Star is one of several single-color glazed patterns in the full Yanco range that use this body. The Green Gem collection is the green version and swaps the handled pieces for square sheer bowls and a rectangular bowl ladder. Note that Yanco's other blue chinaware, the Iris Blue collection, is a different body altogether — coupe ovals and deep ovals rather than rectangles and leaf plates — so the two do not mix on a table.
