Ardis is beige melamine flecked with brown speckles through the body, a stoneware imitation rather than a printed pattern. At 22 items it is the longest of Yanco's three speckle-and-band melamine services, and the only one of them that gives you a tea cup, a dessert dish and two sizes of soup mug. That makes it the pick when one pattern has to cover breakfast, a soup-and-sandwich lunch, and dessert service without borrowing pieces from another line.

Where Ardis is longer than its siblings

Eighteen of the 22 models are shared tooling with Sesame and Pine Tree. Four are not, and they are the reason to choose this line: the AD-9152 tea cup (7 oz), the AD-005 dessert dish (3.5" x 2.5", 72 per case), and a two-step soup mug program — the AD-9016 at 8 oz for a cup portion and the AD-9014 at 12 oz for a bowl portion in the same silhouette. The AD-908 coffee mug (8 oz) handles hot beverages.

Plates, platters and bowls

Round plates come in 6.25", 7.25", 9" and 10".

Seven oval platters sit on five footprints. Flat: AD-209 (9.5" x 7.25"), AD-211 (11.5" x 8"), AD-212 (12" x 9"), AD-214 (14" x 10") and AD-216 (16" x 12"). Walled: AD-221 (11.5" x 8" x 0.75") and AD-222 (12" x 9" x 1").

The bowl program covers 3.5 oz to 32 oz: AD-305 fruit bowl (3.5 oz), AD-302 bouillon cup (8 oz), AD-306 salad bowl (10 oz), AD-314 nappie (11 oz), AD-307 salad bowl (14 oz) and the AD-507 rim soup bowl (32 oz, 7.5").

Speckle or band

The visual choice within this family is straightforward. Speckles scatter across the whole surface and hide crumbs and light scratching; a rim band leaves the center of the plate plain and frames the food. If you want the band instead, that is Sesame. If you want a tan program that scales into cafeteria and buffet quantities with compartment plates and servers, look at Nessico, which carries tan through more than 40 models.
