Yanco Diamond Black Collection

Diamond Black is 45 pieces of matte black glazed china, and it is the most Asian-service-weighted of Yanco's black lines. Ramen bowls at 30 and 45 oz, a miso bowl, a rice bowl, a noodle bowl, a lidded bowl, a handled skillet in two sizes and a 6.5" china spoon all sit in the same glaze as the plate range. That bench is what separates it from Yanco's other matte black pattern, Noble Black, which shares several plate shapes with it but carries no ramen, miso, tea or spoon at all.

What's in the Diamond Black line

• Bowls for Asian service — ramen at 30 and 45 oz, noodle at 36 oz, soup at 24 oz, rice at 10 oz, miso at 8 oz, lidded at 20 oz.
• Other bowls — salad/pasta at 30 oz, salad/soup at 20 oz, salad at 9 oz, square at 6 oz, round bowls at 6" and 8".
• Plates — coupe rounds at 7", 9", 10.5" and 12"; squares at 8", 10" and 12"; rectangles at 8", 10", 10.5", 12" x 5.25" and 12" x 8.5"; triangles at 7", 10.5" and 12"; leaf shapes at 10", 14" and 16".
• Specialty — 12" x 6" compartment plate, two dessert plates, three sauce dishes, two handled skillets.
• Beverage and flatware — 10 oz tea cup, 12 oz mug, 7 oz cup with saucer, 6.5" spoon.

The hot-service pieces

Two skillets with cast handles bring a dish to the table still radiating: the Yanco DB-4105 (22 oz) and the shallower Yanco DB-4106 (18 oz, 5.875"). The Yanco DB-4107 Bowl with Lid (20 oz) is the only covered piece in the line and the only way to hold a steamed course between the pass and the table. Neither shape exists in Yanco's white china patterns.

Ramen, rice and the soup bench

The Yanco DB-3108 Ramen Bowl (45 oz, 8.5" x 3.5") is the deepest bowl here; the Yanco DB-3107 (30 oz) is the lunch-portion version. The Yanco DB-3008 Noodle Bowl (36 oz) is wider and shallower for udon and soba, and the Yanco DB-3007 Soup Bowl (24 oz) covers everything else. Below that, the Yanco DB-3105 Miso Soup Bowl (8 oz) and Yanco DB-3005 Rice Bowl (10 oz) are both 4.5" across but differ in depth — the rice bowl is the taller of the two.

Western bowl service uses the Yanco DB-609 Salad/Pasta Bowl (30 oz), Yanco DB-608 Salad/Soup Bowl (20 oz), Yanco DB-3006 Salad Bowl (9 oz) and Yanco DB-3003 Square Bowl (6 oz), with the deeper Yanco DB-4208 Round Bowl (8") and Yanco DB-4206 Round Bowl (13 oz, 6") filling the middle.

Plates in five outlines

The leaf plates are the signature shape — DB-310 (10" x 4.75"), DB-314 (14" x 6.5") and DB-316 (16" x 7.5"), all narrow enough to run two down a four-top. Rectangles cover DB-408 (8" x 5.5"), DB-410 (10" x 7"), DB-411 (10.5" x 4.375"), DB-413 (12" x 5.25") and DB-412 (12" x 8.5") — note that 12" comes in both a narrow and a wide version. Squares run DB-508 (8"), DB-510 (10") and DB-512 (12"); triangles run DB-207 (7"), DB-210 (10.5") and DB-212 (12"); coupe rounds run 7", 9", 10.5" and 12".

The Yanco DB-4112 Compartment Plate (12" x 6") divides a long rectangle for bento and thali service, and the two shallow dessert plates — DB-610 (10 oz, 9.25" x 5") and DB-611 (16 oz, 11.5" x 6") — have enough wall to hold a sauce.

Condiments and beverage

Three sauce dishes cover the range: the Yanco DB-4030 (2 oz), the deeper Yanco DB-4031 Square Sauce Dish (4 oz) and the twin-well Yanco DB-4032 Double Sauce Dish for soy and ginger side by side. Drinks run on the Yanco DB-9303 Tea Cup (10 oz), the Yanco DB-012 Mug (12 oz) and a 7 oz cup with its own 6" saucer. The Yanco DB-7002 Spoon (6.5") ships 72 to a case.

Diamond Black is one of two matte black patterns in the full Yanco range. Before you choose, put it next to the Noble Black collection — same glaze family, but Noble Black trades the ramen and skillet bench for oval plates, upright-rim rounds and two handled bake plates.
