A ten-by-seven-and-a-half-inch oval is an appetizer plate rather than a serving piece: measured on its long axis it sits right at the ten-inch line, which puts it in the plate family alongside the matching ovals in Yanco's Glory, Mars and Porto patterns.

The shape suits anything that plates long - two crab cakes in a row, a fish fillet, a strip of grilled vegetables, a cheese flight. Ovals also read differently from rounds on a table laid with both, which is useful on a tasting menu. Bone white chinaware with a magnesia body under a full glaze, two dozen to the case.
