A rimmed soup plate of nine inches with an inch and a half of total height, taking eight ounces to a sensible line. The shape is the old banquet standard: a broad flat border with a shallow well in the middle, so a consomme or a thin bisque spreads out and comes to eating temperature quickly instead of staying scalding in a deep crock.

Eight ounces is a starter portion rather than a main, and the wide border gives a server somewhere to hold the plate with a thumb clear of the liquid.
