The two-inch wall is what lets it travel from a hot box without spilling on the way.

Against the twelve-inch deep oval this platter gains two inches of length, an inch and a half of width and eight ounces of capacity. Plan shelving around the footprint, since it will overhang a standard twelve-inch rack. Its two-inch wall is a quarter inch more than the twelve-inch oval carries, which is where the extra volume comes from. The flange carries the pebbling and the broad well is finished smooth.
