Six inches square with a half-inch rise, which is the footprint a bread plate wants: enough to take a roll and a butter curl, small enough to sit inside the cover without pushing the water glass out of position. The square corners give a kitchen somewhere to lay a knife that a round rim does not.

Rome steps up from here to eight and ten inches in the same flat profile, so a table can be set in one geometry from bread to main. White melamine reads as china across a dining room and comes back from the dish pit without the rim chips that retire porcelain bread plates by the dozen. Cases are packed four dozen.
