An oval of eight inches by five and a half, coupe-cut so the surface runs to the edge without a rim. Eight inches on the long axis keeps it a plate: an appetiser and dessert size, suited to two or three bites arranged in a line, a tapas portion, a slice of terrine, or a bread service on a narrow cover.

The oval geometry means it fits where a round of the same capacity would overlap a neighbour. Bone white chinaware, seven-eighths of an inch tall, so a column of them stays compact.
