Fourteen inches on the long axis makes this a platter by the measure Nishi uses, and the nine-and-a-half-inch width backs it up: there is room for a whole fish, a carved and fanned chicken breast, a row of sliced roast, or a family-style vegetable service.

The inch-and-a-half rise at the edge holds juices on the platter instead of on the tablecloth. Twelve to a case, which is the practical ceiling at this size and weight. Bone white chinaware takes a microwave reheat and a dishwasher cycle, and the plain oval leaves the garnish to do the decorating.
