This 8-inch round is the small end of Nessico's dinner plates, and it is the one that gets used where the service area is tight: hospital and senior-living meals, trolley service, anywhere the plate has to share space with cutlery, a drink and a dessert. A 5/8-inch rise keeps gravy and sauce on the plate when the trolley tilts.

Tan is almost standard in those settings. It is warmer than white under institutional lighting, which matters when the room is a dining hall rather than a restaurant, and it hides the marks that come from being scraped with steel cutlery three times a day. Melamine also stays cool enough on the rim to be handled straight out of a heated cabinet.
