The smaller a plate gets, the harder it works: this 5-1/2 inch round goes out as a bread plate, comes back as a sauce landing, and goes out again as a liner beneath a hot drink. Half an inch of depth is enough to keep a buttered roll from sliding off and little enough that it sits flush in a rack.

Tan is the quiet choice for dining rooms that do not want the small plate to announce itself. It also forgives the butter smears and crumbs that this piece collects between courses. Nessico also makes a 5-1/2 inch saucer, NS-9012, at the same diameter but shaped with a central recess; this plate is the flat version of that footprint.
