Yanco LY-307BU Lyon-Blue Chinaware 7" x 6-1/2" x 2-1/4" Oval Soup Plate 15 oz, Blue — Case of 36 (3 dz)

Two and a quarter inches of wall on a seven-inch footprint makes the LY-307BU a steep piece, and glaze on a steep wall behaves the way glaze on a cup does: it runs. The blue is light near the rim of this soup plate and gathers to a deep pool at the bottom, so an empty one shows a graded well.

Fill it and the colour goes under the soup, which is the point — a broth reads as its own colour instead of as a tint borrowed from the china. As the level drops through a course the darker base comes back into view beneath the spoon.
