This oval plate measures 9-1/2" on its long axis, which keeps it two and a half inches shorter than the 12" oval in the pattern and puts it squarely in per-diner territory rather than family service. An oval face suits food that is longer than it is wide - a fillet, a sausage and mash, a folded omelette, a row of three tacos - and wastes less of the plate than a round of the same reach.

It is also the piece a kitchen reaches for when a cover needs to look different from the round plates on the next table without changing the pattern. The red rim follows the oval the whole way round.
