Once an oval runs past ten inches it has stopped being a cover and started being a server, and this is the size a kitchen reaches for before the larger oval: enough for a shared appetizer, a half-dozen pieces of fish, or sides for a table of four.

Depth matters more on a platter than on a plate, because a server carries it one-handed and the food has further to travel. It runs two and a quarter inches shorter than the fourteen-and-a-quarter-inch oval in the same line, which is the difference between a platter that fits a crowded pass and one that does not.
