A rim soup plate is a plate with a sunken well: nine inches across overall, with a well an inch and three-quarters deep holding ten ounces and a broad flat rim surrounding it. That rim is the point — a server can carry the plate with a thumb on the edge without touching the soup, and it leaves a place for a garnish or a cracker.

It plates very differently from a nappie bowl of the same volume: the GB-24 holds the identical ten ounces in a five and a quarter inch bowl with no rim at all. In formal service this one sits on an under-plate; at lunch it goes out on its own.
