A French handled dish is a shallow round baker with a flat tab handle, and the FH-10 is a mid-size dish: eight and a half inches across the round, ten and a quarter overall with the handle, one inch deep. Shallow and wide is the geometry for browning, whether that is a gratin dauphinois, a baked brie, or roasted vegetables in a single layer.

The handle separates this from a plain shallow baker. It gives a cook something to grip with a towel coming out of a hot oven, and a server something to hold that is not the rim.
