An eight inch oval coupe plate with a 5-1/2 inch waist, shallow at one inch, sized for the course that comes before the main: two or three canapes, a cheese selection, a plated sweet. An oval reads differently from a round of similar area and breaks up a table laid mostly with circles.

Being eight inches on the long axis, it is tableware for one diner rather than something a server carries food out on. The narrow waist means two will sit side by side on a standard cover without their edges touching. Gray chinaware in the Cowboy basket weave, with the texture running across the full face.
