Two wells in an eight-by-four-and-a-half-inch rectangle keep a dumpling order and its dipping sauce, or a sandwich half and a scoop of slaw, from running into each other on a narrow footprint. The divider is molded into the plate body rather than added, so there is no joint to trap food and nothing to come loose in a dish machine.

At eight inches long it fits a tray alongside a bowl and a cup, which makes it useful for set-menu and bento-style service where every item has an assigned place. The eye goes to the division, so matte black melamine is the right carrier for a divided plate: it reads as a graphic frame around whatever is plated.
