Nine and a half by five and a half inches with an inch and a quarter well — the larger of two oval deep plates in Black Pearl, and still a plate rather than a platter at this length. The extra inch over the 8-1/2" version takes it from a side portion to a main course.

Ovals earn their place where a rectangle would look severe and a round would waste space: a long piece of fish, a sausage with a bed of lentils, a pair of quail. The well runs the full length, so a sauced dish stays sauced and does not creep towards the ends. Melamine keeps it light enough to handle one-handed off a hot pass, and the matte black surface will not show the pale haze that repeated dish-machine cycles leave on gloss.
