In clay, the three-inch sauce dish reads as a small piece of fired earthenware. The terracotta well is the right background for a dark dipping sauce, where white would wash it out and stainless would turn it into canteen service.

Clay dipping dish, 2 oz

Two ounces, one inch deep, three inches across: enough for a single diner's portion and small enough to sit on the rim of a dinner round without crowding the food. Clay through the inside and black around the outside, consistent with the other clay Birmingham sizes. The melamine body shrugs off the repeated knocks these take in a bus tub, which is where ceramic of this size disappears.
