This small oval is an appetizer plate rather than a platter. At eight and an eighth inches along its long axis it sits inside the ten-inch line that separates the two, and it is scaled for one diner instead of for passing. An oval gives more usable length than a round of the same footprint, which helps with anything laid out in a row.
